Active Learning is the way to go

It has been widely accepted, with some backing from research, that people learn better when they are engaged in practice, as Edgar Dale propounded in his ‘Cone of Experience’, also called the cone of learning.

Consequently, education scholars have recommended the use of active learning methods in schools to bring about good learning outcomes. When pupils or students only listen and write whilst teachers talk extensively, it is called "passive learning". With "active learning", the emphasis is on practice and learners are engaged in tasks that involve problem-solving, analysis, synthesis and evaluation.

It is for this reason that IBIS, EDUKANS and the University of Amsterdam collaborated with the Ghana Education Service and selected colleges of education to provide capacity to teachers, teacher trainers and other education officers in active learning methods under the Basic Education Quality Improvement Programme (BEQUIP).

The project, which started in 2013, has since contributed to an increase in the use of active learning techniques in selected schools in Northern Ghana and is expected to contribute to improved performance of pupils, especially at the basic school level.
